Emeritus Faculty, Security Executive Council
John McCarthy retired as global director of corporate security for Texaco Inc., one of the nationâ€™s leading petroleum and chemical companies. In this capacity, McCarthy directed all aspects of security for Texacoâ€™s multi-billion dollar business in the United States and overseas, involving more than 25,000 employees and contractors working in high-risk environments.
Prior to working at Texaco, McCarthy had a distinguished career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York and Washington, D.C., where he directed several major investigations, including a long-term special operations that involved high profile federal, state and local political figures. He implemented FBI policy, administered and managed investigations, prepared detailed documentation for evidentiary hearings and testified at trials and before Congress. Over the course of his career, McCarthy also served as the senior legal advisor in the Office of Legal Counsel and as a special agent.
McCarthy is a life member of the International Security Management Association (ISMA) and led the State Departmentâ€™s Overseas Security Advisory Council. He holds a J.D. from New York Law School, a masterâ€™s from Long Island University and bachelorâ€™s from St. John's University. He recently developed and implemented a course on corporate security at the State University of New York, Suffolk Community College as an adjunct professor.
As a founding Emeritus Faculty of the Security Executive Council, McCarthy serves as a content expert for Council product/content development.
